I. In fashioning myself I fashion man. -Jean Paul Sartre, Existentialism is a Humanism
II. There are characters both fictional and real that haunt me, whether thru the influence they've had on me or through memories that shaped my life. I consider them ghosts because their presence still exists in my everyday life though they themselves play no part in it. I am creating work to entice, exorcise and entrap my ghosts. These offerings acknowledge their existence, their presence and power at the same time as trying to lay them to rest. Culled from personal relationships and popular American culture my ghosts help define me as a person in the world and inspire who I want to be or sometimes who i do not want be. Everyone has their own ghosts, their own formative figures. By serving as foils these ghosts help me to better understand what it means to be human, and their relentlessness serves as a reminder that no one can ever fully shake their past experiences or their imperfections. We can only try to find a way of wrangling all of them.
III. "One need not be a chamber to be haunted." - Emily Dickenson
